Spring 2025 Calendar: Memorial Day Preparations and Community Events
As we welcome the spring season, the Athenia Veterans Post is excited to announce our comprehensive calendar of events for the coming months. From solemn Memorial Day preparations to vibrant fundraising initiatives and meaningful community service projects, our spring schedule offers numerous opportunities for members and their families to engage, serve, and strengthen the bonds that unite us as veterans and community supporters.
Memorial Day Ceremony Planning and Preparations
Our most significant spring event remains the annual Memorial Day ceremony, scheduled for Monday, May 26, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Athenia Memorial Park. This year's ceremony will honor all fallen service members with special recognition for local veterans who have passed away in the past year. Planning committee meetings will begin on April 3rd and continue every Thursday evening at 7:00 PM through May 22nd at the Post headquarters.
We are seeking volunteers for multiple roles including ceremony coordination, flag placement at veterans' graves, honor guard participation, and logistics support. Members interested in participating in the honor guard should attend the special training session on April 17th at 6:00 PM. All participants must RSVP by April 10th to ensure proper coordination and uniform availability. The ceremony will feature remarks from local officials, a 21-gun salute, wreath laying, and the playing of Taps by our post bugler.
In preparation for Memorial Day, we will conduct our annual cemetery flag placement on Saturday, May 24th, beginning at 8:00 AM. Volunteers will gather at the Post to receive flag assignments and cemetery maps before dispersing to local cemeteries throughout Athenia. This meaningful tradition ensures that every veteran's grave is properly honored with an American flag. We anticipate placing over 800 flags across five cemeteries and welcome family members of all ages to participate in this important service.

Spring Fundraising Initiatives
Our primary spring fundraiser, the Annual Veterans Appreciation Dinner and Auction, will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the Athenia Community Center. Doors open at 5:30 PM with dinner service beginning at 6:30 PM, followed by live and silent auctions starting at 8:00 PM. This elegant evening features a three-course dinner prepared by local culinary professionals, live entertainment, and an extensive auction featuring items donated by community businesses and supporters.
Tickets are priced at $75 per person or $140 per couple and include dinner, entertainment, and auction participation. Early bird pricing of $65 per person is available through March 31st. All proceeds support our veterans assistance fund, which provides emergency financial aid, educational scholarships, and support services to local veterans and their families. Last year's dinner raised over $28,000, and we are aiming to exceed that amount this year with your generous support.
Registration is now open and can be completed at the Post office during regular business hours or by contacting our events coordinator. Seating is limited to 250 guests, and we encourage early registration as this event typically sells out. We are also seeking auction item donations from local businesses and individuals. Donation forms and tax receipts are available at the Post headquarters. Businesses contributing items valued at $100 or more will receive recognition in our event program and on promotional materials.
Additional spring fundraising activities include our monthly breakfast fundraisers held on the first Sunday of each month from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. These popular community gatherings feature a full breakfast menu with proceeds supporting Post operations and programs. The April 6th breakfast will include a special presentation on veteran mental health resources, while the May 4th event will feature a Memorial Day preview and honor guard demonstration.
Member Social Events and Family Activities
Building camaraderie and strengthening connections among our members remains a core mission of the Athenia Veterans Post. Our spring social calendar includes diverse activities designed to bring together veterans, their families, and community supporters in relaxed, enjoyable settings. These gatherings provide opportunities to share experiences, build friendships, and create lasting memories while honoring our shared commitment to service.
Our monthly social nights continue on the third Friday of each month at 7:00 PM at the Post hall. April's gathering on the 18th will feature a trivia competition with military history themes, while May's event on the 16th will include live music from the Veterans Jazz Ensemble and dancing. These casual evenings include light refreshments and provide an excellent opportunity for newer members to meet established Post members in an informal atmosphere.
Family-focused activities include our Spring Family Picnic scheduled for Saturday, May 10th, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Riverside Park. This annual tradition features games, activities for children, a barbecue lunch, and opportunities for families to connect and enjoy the outdoors together. Activities include a softball game, horseshoes, cornhole tournaments, and a special kids' zone with face painting and crafts. All Post members and their families are welcome, and there is no charge to attend. Members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for comfortable seating.
For members interested in outdoor recreation, our Veterans Fishing Club will host spring outings on April 20th and May 18th, departing from the Post at 6:00 AM. These trips provide opportunities for fellowship while enjoying local fishing spots. All skill levels are welcome, and equipment can be borrowed from the Post if needed. Participants should bring their own lunch and beverages, and valid fishing licenses are required.
Community Service Projects and Volunteer Opportunities
Service to our community extends beyond our veteran membership and reflects our commitment to making Athenia a better place for all residents. This spring, we have organized several community service initiatives that allow our members to give back while representing the values of veterans' organizations. These projects provide meaningful ways to contribute time and skills while building positive relationships with community partners.
Our partnership with Athenia Food Pantry continues with monthly volunteer days on the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Post members assist with food sorting, inventory management, and distribution to families in need. April 13th and May 11th volunteer sessions are scheduled, and we encourage members to sign up for at least one shift. This ongoing commitment has made a significant impact on food security in our community, and the pantry staff consistently express appreciation for our reliable volunteer support.
The Spring Community Cleanup Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 27th, beginning at 8:00 AM. Post members will join other community volunteers in cleaning parks, streets, and public spaces throughout Athenia. Participants should meet at the Post headquarters for team assignments and supply distribution. The cleanup typically runs until noon, followed by a community appreciation lunch provided by local sponsors. This visible demonstration of civic pride showcases veterans' continued commitment to community service and environmental stewardship.
Our Veterans Mentorship Program launches this spring with an orientation session on April 9th at 6:30 PM. This new initiative pairs experienced Post members with younger veterans transitioning to civilian life. Mentors provide guidance on employment, education, benefits navigation, and community integration. We are seeking both mentors and mentees for this program, which represents an important expansion of our member support services. Training for mentors will be provided, and the program coordinator will facilitate initial matches based on shared experiences and interests.
Spring Service Project Schedule
- Mentorship Program Orientation: April 9, 6:30 PM
- Food Pantry Volunteer Days: April 13 & May 11, 9:00 AM
- Community Cleanup Day: April 27, 8:00 AM
